En el encuentro, los dos arquitectos presentarán sus experiencias en el
ámbito de la restauración e intervención de edificios y su reconversión en
museos. Frade y Kizis tendrán la oportunidad de dialogar e intercambiar
conocimiento.

¿Cómo compaginar el respeto hacia
un edificio declarado Bien de Interés Cultural con las exigencias
necesarias de un museo de nuestro tiempo? A mi juicio, el acierto de la
intervención radica siempre en el acuerdo equilibrado entre ambos aspectos;
esto es: entre Tradición y Desarrollo, asumiendo determinados sacrificios de
planteamiento con el objeto de potenciar la relación entre el edificio y la
colección sin desmerecer ninguno de sus valores.
No es nuevo apuntar que el uso como museo en un edificio de carácter histórico
implica una serie de consideraciones muy específicas tanto hacia las trazas
originales del propio edifico como hacia las respuestas que debe ofrecer desde
un punto de vista funcional. Si esta premisa es contemplada desde los primeros
planteamientos de una manera “natural”, se puede obtener gran provecho para el
conjunto a pesar de aquello que puede parecer a priori un inconveniente.
Hemos considerado aconsejable solapar en la intervención la emoción que
nos transmiten los museos de principios de siglo XX, con la eficacia
comunicativa y los requerimientos de conservación que permite la tecnología actual y pensamos
que es absolutamente posible y necesario el recuperar muchos aspectos
museográficos hoy aparentemente fuera de lugar pero de gran interés si son
interpretados desde una clave contemporánea.
En definitiva, se trata de alcanzar una solución que emocione y sugiera
en silencio desde un planteamiento
respetuoso hacia el proyecto original. Un museo abierto a la sociedad en donde
todo aquel que lo recorra sienta que éste ha sido realizado a la medida de sus
intereses y conocimientos.

Diseñando para una nueva lectura del pasado

Del premio internacional Europa Nostra por el Museo al aire libre de la
Energía del agua de Dimitsana (1999) al primer premio por el Museo del Argo en
Volos (2014).
Museo: un artefacto arquitectónico siempre sujeto a su lugar, creado a
partir de múltiples lecturas de la historia, mitos y leyendas, destinado a
expresar el mensaje de su pasado a las nuevas generaciones. Los museos hacen
referencia primeramente al Lugar, es su espíritu el que ellos sirven, su
memoria el que reviven y en algún momento, si son realmente conscientes de ser
fruto de ese Lugar, deberían estar identificados como Monumentos
arquitectónicos de su Lugar, integrando el paisaje.
Nuevo uso del Monumento como Museo: un edificio existente satisface la
demanda de relacionarse con el Lugar: lo que lo ata de manera irrompible es su
antiguo uso, ya sea espiritual, productivo o social. En los monumentos
restaurados para convertirse en museos de su uso original, las marcas
arquitectónicas contribuirán a proyectar el lazo con el Lugar. En los “museos
temáticos” de cualquier tipo, donde el “tema” se refiere al Lugar, la
arquitectura es llamada a apoyar de alguna manera tanto el valor del antiguo
caparazón como el de la nueva exposición. La cuestión es siempre crear un
diálogo equilibrado entre lo antiguo y lo nuevo.
Nuevos edificios para Museos Temáticos: de nuevo el mismo juego de
equilibrio. Si el artefacto arquitectónico expresa el Tema y su mito, y aún al
mismo tiempo subraya de manera empática la relación con el Lugar, el diseño de
la exposición complementará e interpretará el simbolismo del concepto
arquitectónico; al fin y al cabo también nace –o debería- de las mismas
cuestiones conceptuales de la visión curatorial.
Arquitectura de Museos: en cualquier caso, estamos abordando la
arquitectura una vez más. Con el juego de equilibro entre lo antiguo y lo
nuevo, con la invocación de la memoria y su proyección en el futuro, con la
certeza de lo dado y experimentado de lo nuevo, su encanto y sus trampas. Los
Museos sirven al Futuro y la Tradición sirve a la Evolución; uno se cuestiona,
¿los arquitectos entienden esto?
Yannis Kizis
Juan Pablo Rodríguez Frade es arquitecto desde 1983 y constituye la
empresa Frade Arquitectos S.L. en 2005.
Es Premio Nacional 1995 de Restauración y Conservación de Bienes
Culturales por la Rehabilitación del Palacio de Carlos V como Museo de la
Alhambra.
Está dirigiendo en la actualidad la instalación museográfica del Museo
de Málaga y en breve comenzará con la museografía de la ampliación del Museo de
Cádiz, y el Museo de la Real Colegiata de San Isidoro en León.
Ha realizado en torno a 200 exposiciones temporales en los cinco
continentes, citando entre otros los siguientes países: España, Francia,
Alemania, México, Ecuador, Turquía, Polonia, Italia, Filipinas, Corea y
Australia. Ha realizado el Pabellón de España en la Exposición Internacional
2012 de Yeosu, Corea del Sur.
Yannis Kizis se graduó en la Universidad Técnica Nacional de Atenas,
Escuela de Arquitectura en 1971. En 1971 recibió su diploma de postgraduación
en la Universidad de York I.A.A.S., (diploma en Conservation Studies), y en
1987 fue becado para su doctorado en la U.T.N. de Atenas. Ha sido ampliamente
publicado en el ámbito de la integración del diseño contemporáneo en contextos
históricos, en construcción tradicional, conservación y restauración. Ha
publicado libros sobre la arquitectura del siglo XVIII-XIX en el Monte Pelion y
en Tracia.
Es el gerente de Kizis Architects, un estudio de arquitectura con sede
en Atenas centrado en proyectos específicos de diseño, integración de
arquitectura contemporánea en contextos históricos, y restauración de
monumentos. Ha sido premiado de manera repetida en concursos de arquitectura, y
galardonado con el Premio Internacional Europa Nostra (1984, 1992, 1999).
Kizis es profesor en la Universidad Técnica Nacional de Atenas, Escuela
de Arquitectura.

ανταλλάξουν απόψεις.

Εθνικό Βραβείο το 1995 για
Αποκατάσταση και Συντήρηση Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς για την αποκατάσταση του
Παλατιού του Καρόλου V και τη μετατροπή του σε Μουσείο της Αλάμπρα.
Πώς να συνδυαστούν ο σεβασμός
για ένα κτήριο που έχει ανακηρυχθεί κτήριο πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς με τις
απαιτήσεις ενός σύγχρονου μουσείου? Πιστεύω ότι η επιτυχία της παρέμβασης
εξαρτάται από την ισορροπία μεταξύ της παράδοσης και της ανάπτυξης. Θα πρέπει
να γίνουν κάποιες θυσίες, αποσκοπώντας στην καλύτερη δυνατή σχέση μεταξύ του
κτηρίου και της συλλογής που θα φιλοξενήσει.
Η μετατροπή ενός ιστορικού
κτηρίου σε μουσείο συνεπάγεται μία σειρά από πολύ συγκεκριμένους
προβληματισμούς που αφορούν στα ίχνη του ίδιου του κτηρίου και στις απαντήσεις
που θα πρέπει να δοθούν σε λειτουργικό επίπεδο. Αν αυτοί οι προβληματισμοί
ληφθούν υπόψη από την αρχή του σχεδιασμού, όσα στοιχεία μοιάζουν αρχικά
προβληματικά, μπορούν να λειτουργήσουν σε όφελος του έργου.
Στα έργα μας, θεωρήσαμε
σκόπιμο να συνδυάσουμε τον συναισθηματισμό που προκύπτει από τα μουσεία των
αρχών του 20ου αιώνα, με τις δυνατότητες επικοινωνίας και συντήρησης που μας
εξασφαλίζει πλέον η τεχνολογία.
Ο απώτερος στόχος είναι να
φτάσουμε σε μία τολμηρή λύση που μπορεί να συναρπάσει, σεβόμενη εντούτοις το
αρχικό έργο, δημιουργώντας ένα μουσείο ανοιχτό σε όλους, όπου ο κάθε επισκέπτης
θα νιώθει ότι ο χώρος απευθύνεται στα ενδιαφέροντα του.

Aπό τη διεθνή διάκριση της
Europa Nostra για το Υπαίθριο Μουσείο Υδροκίνησης στη Δημητσάνα (1999) μέχρι το
1º βραβείο για το Μουσείο της Αργούς στο Βόλο (2014).
Μουσείο: αρχιτεκτόνημα
πάντοτε δεμένο με τον τόπο του, φτιαγμένο για την κάθε λογής ανάγνωση της
ιστορίας, των μύθων και των θρύλων του, προορισμένο για να μεταδώσει το μήνυμα
του παρελθόντος του σε κάθε νέα γενιά. Στον Τόπο πρωτίστως αναφέρονται τα
Μουσεία, το Πνεύμα του υπηρετούν, τη Μνήμη του αναβιώνουν∙ κάποια στιγμή, αν
είναι συνειδητά γεννήματα αυτού του Τόπου, ίσως εγγραφούν κι αυτά ως
αρχιτεκτονικά Μνημεία του Τόπου τους, τοπόσημά του.
Νέα χρήση Μνημείου ως
Μουσείο: το υφιστάμενο κτίσμα ικανοποιεί το αίτημα δεσμού με τον Τόπο: το έδεσε
άρρηκτα η παλιά χρήση του, πνευματική, παραγωγική, κοινωνική. Στα “μουσεία του
εαυτού τους” οι αρχιτεκτονικές χειρονομίες θα υποβοηθήσουν την προβολή του
δεσμού με τον τόπο. Στα κάθε λογής “θεματικά μουσεία”, όπου το θέμα αναφέρεται
στον τόπο και μόνον, η αρχιτεκτονική καλείται να στηρίξει ισόρροπα και τις δύο
αξίες, τόσο του παλιού κελύφους, όσο και της έκθεσης του νέου μουσείου. Πάντοτε
το ζητούμενο είναι ο ισορροπημένος διάλογος του νέου με το παλιό.
Νέα κτίρια Θεματικών
Μουσείων: πάλι κι εδώ παίζεται το ίδιο παιγνίδι ισορροπίας. Αν το αρχιτεκτόνημα
εκφράζει το Θέμα και το μύθο του, αλλά ταυτόχρονα κι εμφαντικά τη σχέση του με
τον Τόπο, ο σχεδιασμός της έκθεσης θα έρθει να συμπληρώσει και να ερμηνεύσει
διεξοδικά το συμβολισμό της αρχιτεκτονικής σύλληψης -άλλωστε και αυτή έχει
γεννηθεί- οφείλει να έχει γεννηθεί‐ από τα ίδια νοηματικά ζητούμενα με τη
μουσειολογική προσέγγιση.
Αρχιτεκτονική Μουσείων:
μιλάμε σε κάθε περίπτωση, ακόμη μια φορά, για την Αρχιτεκτονική. Για το
παιγνίδι ισορροπίας ανάμεσα στο παλιό και το νέο, για την ανάκληση της μνήμης
και την προβολή στο μέλλον, για τη σιγουριά του δεδομένου και το πείραμα του
νεωτερικού, με τη γοητεία και τις παγίδες του. Το Μουσείο υπηρετεί το Μέλλον
και η Παράδοση την Εξέλιξη∙ οι αρχιτέκτονες, άραγε, το καταλαβαίνουν;

O Juan Pablo Rodríguez Frade
είναι αρχιτέκτονας από το 1983, και το 2005 ίδρυσε το γραφείο Frade
Arquitectos.
Το 1995 του απονεμήθηκε το
Εθνικό Βραβείο για Αποκατάσταση και Συντήρηση Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς για την
αποκατάσταση του Παλατιού του Καρόλου V και τη μετατροπή του σε Μουσείο της
Αλάμπρα.
Αυτή την περίοδο ασχολείται
με τη μουσειογραφική εγκατάσταση του Μουσείου της Μάλαγα και πολύ σύντομα θα
ξεκινήσει τη μουσειογραφία της επέκτασης του Μουσείου Cádiz και του Μουσείου
Real Colegiata de San Isidoro στη Λεόν.
Έχει σχεδιάσει πάνω από 200
περιοδικές εκθέσεις σε πέντε ηπείρους, σε χώρες όπως η Ισπανία, η Γαλλία, η
Γερμανία, το Μεξικό, το Εκουαδόρ, η Τουρκία, η Πολωνία, η Ιταλία, οι
Φιλιππίνες, η Κορέα και η Αυστραλία. Έκανε επίσης το περίπτερο της Ισπανίας για
την Διεθνή Έκθεση του 2012 στο Yeosu της Νότιας Κορέας.
Ο Γιάννης Κίζης σπούδασε
Αρχιτεκτονική στο Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο, όπου και ολοκλήρωσε τις σπουδές
του το 1971. Έλαβε μεταπτυχιακό δίπλωμα στις αναστηλώσεις, από το Πανεπιστήμιο
του York, το 1977, και Διδακτορικό Δίπλωμα από το Ε.Μ.Π., το 1987. Έχει
πραγματοποιήσει δημοσιεύσεις σε θέματα που σχετίζονται με την ένταξη της
σύγχρονης αρχιτεκτονικής σε ιστορικό περιβάλλον, στον τομέα της παραδοσιακής
κατασκευής και της αναστηλωτικής πρακτικής. Έχει γράψει βιβλία για την
παραδοσιακή αρχιτεκτονική στο Πήλιο, στη Θράκη και στη Σαμοθράκη.
Διευθύνει το Γραφείο Κίζη,
που ασχολείται κυρίως με την ειδική σύνθεση, ένταξη σύγχρονης αρχιτεκτονικής σε
ιστορικό περιβάλλον, με αποκαταστάσεις μνημειακών κτιρίων. Τιμήθηκε
επανειλημμένα με το διεθνές βραβείο Europa Nostra (1984,1992,1999) και
διακρίθηκε σε αρχιτεκτονικούς διαγωνισμούς.
Είναι Καθηγητής στην
Αρχιτεκτονική Σχολή του Μετσοβίου Πολυτεχνείου.

property for the rehabilitation of the Carlos V Palace as the Alhambra museum.
How to combine the respect for a building declared cultural property
with the requirements of a museum of our time? I believe the success of the
intervention, lies on the balance between two aspects, tradition and
development, assuming specific sacrifices in the approach, with the goal of
maximize the relationship between the building and the Collection without
detracting any of its values.
It’s not new to mention that turning an historical building into a
museum, implies a series of very specific considerations towards the original
traces of the own building and the answers that it has to offer from a
functional point of view. If these premises are contemplated since the
beginning, it can bring lot of benefits to the project even though at first
sight they might seem an inconvenient.
We considered advisable to overlap in the intervention, the emotion that
transmits the museums of the beginnings of the XX century, with the efficient
communication and the conservation requirements that the new technology give us
and we think it is absolutely possible and necessary to recover several
museographic aspects that today might be out of place but of great interest if
they are interpreted from a contemporary point of view.
At the end it’s all about reaching a solution that can thrill and be
suggestive without disrespecting the original project, creating a museum open
to the people where everyone that visits feels that this space was made to its
interest and knowledge.

Designing for a new reading of the past

From the international Europa Nostra award for the Open air Water Power
Museum in Dimitsana (1999) to the first prize for the Museum for the Argo in
Volos (2014).
Museum: an architectural artefact always tied up with its place, made of
any sort of readings of history, myths and legends, fated to convey the message
of its past to any new generation. Museums refer primarily to Place, it is its
spirit which they serve, its memory which they revive; at a certain moment, if
they indeed are conscious offsprings of that Place, they might be registered as
architectural Monuments of their Place, landmarking it.
Monument’s new use as Museum: an existing building satisfies the demand
of bonding with the Place: what tied it unbreakably is its old use, either
spiritual, productive or social. In monuments restored to be museums of their
original use architectural gestures will contribute in projecting the bond with
the Place. In “thematic museums” of any kind, where the “theme” refers only to
the Place, architecture is called to evenly support both the value of the old
shell and that of the new exhibition. The question is always a balanced
dialogue among old and new.
New buildings for Thematic Museums: again the same game of balancing. If
the architectural artefact expresses the Theme and its myth, yet at the same
time emphatically underlines the relation with the Place, the exhibition design
will come to complement and interpret the symbolism of the architectural
concept; after all this is also born —or should be— from the very same
conceptual questions with the curatorial approach.
Museum Architecture: in any case, we are dealing with architecture once
more. With the game of balancing between new and old, with the invocation of
memory and its projection in the future, with the certainty of the given and
the experiment of the new, its charm and its traps. Museums serve the Future
and Tradition serves Evolution; do architects, one wanders, understand this?
Yannis Kizis
Juan Pablo Rodríguez Frade is an architect since 1983 and founded the
studio Frade Arquitectos S.L. in 2005.
He received the 1995 National Price in Restoration and Maintenance of
Cultural Heritage for the Restoration of the Palace of Charles V as the Museum
of Alhambra.
At present he is in charge of the museographic installation of the
Málaga Museum and he will start very soon with the museography of the extension
of the Cádiz Museum and the Real Colegiata de San Isidoro Museum in León.
He conceived around 200 temporary exhibitions in five continents, in
countries such as: Spain, France, Germany, Mexico, Ecuador, Turkey, Poland,
Italy, Philippines, Korea and Australia. He made the Spanish Pavilion for the
2012 International Exposition held in Yeosu, South Korea. Yannis Kizis
graduated at the National Technical University of Athens, School of
Architecture in 1971. In 1977 he got his post‐graduate Degree from the University of York, I.A.A.S.,
(diploma in Conservation Studies), and in 1987 was granted his PhD at the
N.T.U. Athens. He has been extensively publishing on integration of
contemporary design into historical context, on traditional construction,
conservation, and restoration. He has published books on the 18th–19th c.
architecture on Mt. Pelion and in Thrace.
He has been principal of Kizis Architects, an Athens based architectural
practice focused on specific design issues, integration of contemporary
architecture into historical context, and restoration of monuments. He has been
repeatedly awarded in architectural competitions, and honoured by the
International “Europa Nostra” award (1984, 1992, 1999).
He is a Professor at the N.T.U. Athens School of Architecture.
